The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) extends an invitation to South African students to apply for the Bursary Programme for the academic year 2024.

SANSA is offering bursaries for Postgraduate studies (Honours/4th year, MTech, Masters, DTech, and Doctoral) in the following fields:

  1. Earth Observation (Hons, MSc, PhD):
    • Remote sensing
    • Geospatial program
    • Earth system science with remote sensing
    • Earth observations in ecosystems accounting
    • Applications of remote sensing in environmental management, including oceans and marine, agricultural and rangelands, water resource management, mineral resource, and spatial planning.
  2. Engineering (MEng, MTech, MSc, PhD, DTech):
    • Software and software systems engineering
    • Aeronautical, aerospace, mechanical, electrical, electronic, mechatronic, and computer engineering
    • Space, systems, antenna, and RF engineering.
  3. Space Science (Hons, MSc, MPhil, PhD):
    • Solar physics and space weather forecasting
    • Antarctic radar studies of atmospheric gravity waves
    • Multi-instrument studies of space weather
    • Modelling geomagnetically induced currents in power systems
    • Multi-scale ionospheric physics, structure, and dynamics
    • Ionospheric and radio propagation modelling
    • Theory of waves and solutions in plasmas
    • Atmospheric radiation studies
    • Verification of space weather forecasting.
  4. All SANSA divisions (Hons, MSc, PhD):
    • Computer science
    • Information systems
    • Software and systems engineering
    • Data science
    • Fields related to key SANSA objectives.

SANSA bursaries will be granted as follows (these amounts are subject to change):

  • Honours studies: R100 000 for 1 year of study (plus an allowance determined case by case).
  • Masters studies: R120 000 (inclusive) for 2 years of study.
  • PhD studies: R140 000 (inclusive) for 3 years of study.

Note that recipients may not receive bursaries exceeding the amounts above. If applicants have a bursary of a lower amount, SANSA may provide a top-up bursary to cover the difference.

Masters and doctoral students must reapply for funding annually, and bursaries will be renewed based on satisfactory progress from the previous year.

Minimum Requirements: Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria before applying:

  • South African citizenship
  • Strong academic potential
  • Pursuing or intending to pursue a postgraduate qualification in one of the specified fields
  • Demonstrated financial need.
